Saving Your Clients by Helping Them Save Themselves

This week I've been talking to a variety of Accounting Professionals across the country and have been working on getting a better feel for the kinds of clients who are suffering the worst of it during the last three months. As a starter, here is a bulleted list of the kind of clients who seem to be dropping off:

Car dealers, large and small… ancillary services associated with the dealerships such as Autobody Shops with exclusive deals… Realtors (surprise, surprise?)… Home inspection services… Small mortgage brokers… Some or all restaurant locations… Day Spas… Small to mid-sized contractors…

Well, the auto and realty industries are not likely to recover any time soon, but those restaurants, day spas, and contractors might have a chance!

Now here is where my Organizational Management brain starts talking to my keyboard... those of you reading this, whether you know it or not, have a pretty good understanding of how this works. The ultra short form of what the field of Organizational Management attempts to do is this: build and/or clean things up where business processes collide with HR management. As an accounting professional who has insight into the payroll of multiple clients, you get to see a little bit of everything. You know who the client's suppliers are, how many people they employ, if they own or lease their properties and even if the IRS is likely to find anything ‘odd' if they came sniffing around. The client may have even confided in you through casual conversation, or asked your advice about an HR issue they are up against. In other words, there is no one else out there with a better understanding of what is under the hood, either making that business purr like well fed cat, or run in circles like a gerbil in one of those hilarious plastic balls.

The question right now is what can you do with this knowledge that will help a troubled (not hopeless) client keep their head above water?

I would put on your graduation hat, flip the tassel back to the other side and put pencil to paper to write a mini case study on one of your clients who is in trouble. Start by writing down everything you know about the client. Nothing is irrelevant. It is likely that a troubled client has not changed much since the economy did a high-dive into an empty pool three months ago, and if they did, it was probably a band-aid on a gaping chest wound (I did remember something from Boy Scouts!).

Take this pile of data, and throw it a mixing bowl with the ingredients known as ‘Recession', local variables, and a healthy dash of fear. Stir it up in your head and then start brainstorming about why the client is feeling the pain.

Imaginary Case Study:

Let's pretend that the client is a five location restaurant owner. After stirring the pot, we realize that they have two of their restaurants in troubled locations. One is next to a mid-sized manufacturer who you know just laid off 25 of 200 employees. Not only did they lose 25 potential customers, but the rest of the employees are brown bagging their lunches now. The other businesses in the industrial park are also likely to be feeling the pain and looking at some strategic layoffs to keep afloat. The other troubled location recently opened and was strategically placed next to a brand new business park that now has 10% of its pads filled, and lots and lots of, "Build2Suit… For Lease… and Vacancy" signs everywhere. On the other hand the other three locations are in secure areas for drive-by visibility from all walks of life and haven't seen any significant drop off in clientele. The business is on sound financial footing, other than taking a big loss from the two sites that aren't performing. They lease their locations from a property management company, and have been in the black for the past five years - until Q4 of CY08.

Now with your knowledge of their business, could you put together a scenario in your mind where they could live or die this year depending on core decisions made about the two locations that are not performing? Can you assist them in either unloading the properties, or mothballing them, or re-structuring their operation to remain or become successful?

What if we advised the client to make the following changes:

  1. Properties A, B, & C (doing well in high traffic areas)

    1. Don't fix what isn't broken
  2. Property D (losing business, but not failing, in the impoverished industrial park)

    1. Modify their operation to keep costs down

    2. Reduce their hours of operation

      1. Reduce head-count

      2. Take a shift or two as the manager/owner
    3. Modify the menu to 100% value items

    4. Get on their feet for some direct marketing to the local businesses

      1. Recession coupons, etc.

      2. ‘Bailout Burgers'

      3. ‘Economic Stimulus Energy Smoothies'

      4. …you get the picture

  3. Property E (throwing away spoiled food in empty industrial park)

    1. Cut their losses and break the lease

    2. Mothball the operation until things get rolling again

This client could be seeing black in a sea of red, sooner than their competition, after taking a mild, but humbling hit up front. If they take your advice to take the steps today to make tomorrow brighter - you will have a client for life.

I was in a car wreck the other day. I am at fault and I have no insurance. I am worried.?
Sorry about this being so long of a message but please help because I am worrying myself sick. Also this is a update to my other question. I was in a car wreck last Tuseday which will be a week ago this Tuseday. I am at fault and I have no insurance because my dad was the one that was taking care of it but he has no job and his un-employment ran out a few weeks ago. I never thought about not driving my car even with no insurance because I am 19 years old and of course at that age you never really think about something like this happening to you or you say "It won't happen to me". What happend was I was at a red light that was green and I was turning left when this pickup truck came speeding on the other side of the same street I was on to try to beat the red light from what I figure and she may not have been payying attention to what was in front of her. The street was one of those four way streets that looks like a plus sign +. I was on the bottom of the + and she was on the top of the +. Sorry I just used that to try to explain it better. Well there was a car in front of me on my side of the street and a car in front of her on her side of the street. The first car on her side went straight while the first car on my side waited until the other first car went by then turned left. Then I stopped and waited on a car that was on her side of the street to go by before I turned left. After the car went by I started to turn left because I though it was my turn to turn. My grandmother that was in the car with me even said it was my turn so we both thought the same thing. I saw that the truck was far down the street a few hundred feet so it had time to stop and plus like I said I though it was my turn to go and that she was supposed to stop. The truck had to be speeding to get to us so fast and hit us as we were turning. When I told my dad what happend he said she had the right a way even though she was far down the street so I would be at fault but I don't know if that is true or not yet. My whole front end and hood of my car is destroyed. I did not even look at the womans truck because I was up-set and shook up from it. The white truck bounced off my car and hit a truck that was parked at a autobody shop of all things. The third truck was one of the autobody shops workers truck. I think it did not do much damage to the third truck. As I said I am at fault from what my dad says and I have no insurance. Also as I said he has no job and his un-employment ran out a few weeks ago. He did have insurance that was good until next month and we even have the papers about it still in the car but with no money my dad could not pay it so it expired early but we never got a cancal notice saying it was cancaled. I have no job and my dad has no job so we have no way to pay anything. Also the car was in his name along with his car and his motorcycle. My grandmother talked to a lawyer the other day and he told her the worst they can do to me is take my license for up to a year which is no big deal to me because the only place I ever drove on my own was to my grandmother which lives down the street from me. Plus I was planning to put my car up and use it only when I needed to when it started getting cooler weather and just go back to walking to my grandmothers like I have been doing before I could drive. I was planing on doing this even before the wreck happend because it is only a 15 minute walk to and from my grandmothers from where I live and I have walked it over a hundred times before. I am use to not driving that much anyway even though I know how to drive. I have been looking for a job for a while now so that will be the only thing I would need to drive for if I did get a job but my grandmother said she would take me to and from work if they do take my license and I get a job. The lawyer said the worst they can do in all is to sue my dad so the lawyer told my grandmother that he needs to take his car and motercycle out of his name so no one can take them. The lawyer said that they which is the other people involved in the wreck and anyone else that can sue us for the wreck can't do much to us because we have zero ways of paying for any damage due to not haveing a job or anyother way to pay for damages and that they would have to drop the case because my dad is renting a house so they can not touch that and he has nothing in his name but his car and motercycle and my car which he is going to take his car and motorcycle out of his name and just leave my car in his name sometime this week. I am wanting someone else's opinion about what could happen to me and my dad or if the lawyer that my grandmother talked to is right. What should we do? Anyway I am sorry for the long message here but I am worrying myself very bad. I live in Tennesse by the way because I know each state has a diffrent way of doing things. Well I have learned the hard way that I should not drive without insurance so I will never be do UPDATE: I forgot to add that I don't even know if the other two people that were involved in the crash even had insurance as well and My grandmother tryied to get a accident report but the people at the police station said they could not find it. We are going to go back tommorow to see if we can get one. What will happen if the either of theother people had no insurance or the police really can not find the accident report?

How much will an autobody shop charge me to weld in new floorboards on my rustbucket?
The floorboards have rust holes, and i want to restore my car, it is a 1985 Jaguar and it has rust holes in the floorboards. The roof, hood, and trunk also need a re-spray, i was hoping they could make the top Black (from the windows up) and keep the rest of the car its Grey, the paint on the doors is ok. How much, for the rust, and how much for those sections of new paint, changing the color on one of them, approximately?
