Auto Body Repair / Collision Shop 5 Ways to Increase Your Profits

Let's face, your profit margins are consciously being squeezed. The way to combat this issue is to evolve into new products and services that are right at reach. Your Collision Shop is just another retail outlet; your business has much more potential than just changing a fender. The time to be nimble and creative is here. As with any retail center, the hardest part is getting the customer in the door. Once they have agreed for you to repair their vehicle, it is time to up sell them on numerous other products and services that they might desire. I have listed five ways to build your profit in this sagging economy.

· Rentals: Do you offer any rental service? Do you have a free loner vehicle? A free loner does not make you money, it might add as a customer value item, needed to get the job, but in reality that is not necessarily your business. Well, let's make it your business; maybe have a few vehicles that you offer for $30/day. Maybe waive that fee to loyal customers. Many insurance polices have rental coverage, maybe it is time to get a piece of that pie. Or better yet, do not have any rentals, contact all your local rental agencies and create an affiliate program with them. See who will give you the best rates for your customers and what referral they will pay. I would set it up so the rental agency can pick up your customer right at your shop, this could create better customer service, alleviate you owning and renting vehicles, and make a few dollars.

· Value added products & services: This is where you need to think outside of the box. What kind of products can I sell this customer in need? 3M just came out with a great headlamp restoration system. You can polish the old composite headlamps to look like new, I am sure you could sell this to anyone with those fogged over yellow lamps. Seems like this could be somewhat of an easy sale. What about a vehicle polish, "exterior detail"? Here is an example; Hi Mr. customer, I notice that your vehicle's finish is looking a little dull, for $79.99 we can polish your vehicle back as close as possible to the factory finish.

· Detail: Offer a $99.99 interior detail. Again, if it is viable and you have the space, do it in house. If it is not something you are interested in doing, start an affiliate program with a local detail company. I would contact all in the area and work something out. Have the detail company pick customer vehicle up and drop off. This way, you can collect the money from the customer at your detail rate, and pay the detail shop the rates you have worked out. I know this would be a good market, most people getting auto body repair work want they auto back in clean and as new condition as possible.

· Suppliers: Wither it is a parts supplier or materials supplier, you need to squeeze their profit margin as well. I would contact all my suppliers on a quarterly basis and see if they can give you a deal. I am not suggesting dropping old ones and adding new, but just see what they can do. It never hurts to ask. Competition in these markets are fierce, let those forces work for you. You are the customer in this situation. Keystone is a leader in remanufactured wheels and bumpers, but there are numerous others that compete against them, just see what the comparison is. The same goes for OEM parts suppliers, they are very cut throat. Just like it is challenging to get a customer in the shop, it is as challenging for a vender to get and retain you as a customer.

· Insurance Company Relations: Build your relationship with the insurance companies and appraisers. Wither you like it or not, insurance companies are your largest clientele. I am not suggesting any sort of "DRP" direct repair programs. I actually am a huge advocate against this sort of monopolistic rule. It is troublesome that the government allows this; these programs should be banned ASAP. Anyhow, I would work with the carriers and let them know we all have to make a living, if your walk in hourly rate is x dollars, that is what it is.

I hope that if anything, this article gets you to ponder all the revenue possibilities at hand. You own and operate a large retail center; with a little forward think you should be able to realize all the profit potential at hand. Once the customer is in your store, start selling them on all the other great products and services you offer. Affiliate programs I personally think work the best. Good luck. On Friday paid upfront to get my bumper and rear lights replaced. The cost was half of every one else. I paid in full and have to take my car on monday. In hindsite, I realised that the worker looked shady , there closed on saterday and Im afraid they stoled my money. My question is, can a company take your cash, after going out of business or filing bankruptcy. Legally, if this is the case, can I go after them in court. Please help with this question. Auto accident not at fault, disagree with insurance claiming its not total loss?
This past weekend at 3am, i was side swiped and ended up in a ditch. The other vehicle's driver and passenger attempted to hit and run but were stuck in the mud. They decided to ditch their truck and leave on foot and were picked up by another vehicle. Police finally made it there and took my report, towed my car out of the ditch and to the collision shop. I have a 2008 mazda 3 and just got the car this past tuesday, financed 12,500. the estimate from my insurance company is 7,443.13. but the collision shop states they do their own and this might change for better or worse. Trade in is 12k retail is about 13.5 k. I am curioius as to why my insurance company just didnt total out my vechile. Anyone have and suggestions or similar cases like this to help ? waiting on my police report to find out if anyone knows anything about the jacks who ran me off the road or if anything is going to happen to them. I guess I just don't want a "repair" job. The shop has to still put it on a lift to see if there is frame or any other damage the insurance missed so I will just hope for that! I was run off the road by a drunk driver and I shouldn't have to settle for a car that is fixed now due to their negligence! I thought if the repairs were more than 1/2 of the Value of the car they totaled out the vehicle, was just looking for others peoples experiences. Yes i do have a problem with someone "fixing" a car that less than a week ago there was nothing wrong with! They plan on "repairing" my alloy wheels! I dont know how they can put a car in better condition when a week ago it had never been in a car accident before! I would not be making a profit i would just be getting out of this problem that this drunk driver has put me in, i pay my insurance premium for this reason, and shouldnt have to fight for what is right! Now when the time comes for me to sell/trade I will not get a fair value due to this accident which was not my fault!

I can't seem to find a job?
I'm in very bad situation right now where I'm stuck at home with my mother who constantly nagging about everything that I do. I'm 22 years old but I dropped out of college because of this constant anger and disagreement with my parents. I was working at a collision shop making $10/hour for about a month, after which I decided quit since they treated me like a criminal and I was being blamed for minor obstacles that wasn't my fault. I'm currently unemployed and last week I gone to about 3 different interviews with employers, one of whom promised me position only day before I called back to find out about my interview weaknesses. I couldn't get hired and it kills me that I don't have a job, I seem to try my best but my resume is lacking and I really have no experience with other jobs. I really want a job so I can move out of here and rent my own place which I already searched, but the underlying problem is that with all the efforts and resumes, online applications and phone calls, I still don't have a place to work. Can anyone share their experience if you ever was in this situation? Thank you

Car Troubles Looking For Advice Plz!?
I was having my 98 Ford Contour repaired after being ran into a curb by another driver. I took it to Firestone a few days ago and they were gonna replace the right control arm w/ ball joints and struts because they were bent. I was told it would take four hours and later that day they called because after replacing the parts, they were having trouble aligning the car and thought maybe the frame or subframe may have been damaged too. Today I went and picked up the car and the service tech. told me that I should take it to a Frame shop because its still not driving well. I just paid $983.41 to have the work they did do but while driving it home, it seems to me to be worse handling than when I dropped it off. I'm just thinking that maybe its because the new parts and not being able to align it but I'm not gonna drive it much cuz I really feel I would be endangering others by doing so. I will take it to a collision shop to have it looked at but I'm just looking for advice on maybe what I will be looking at price wise because even though I was asking alot of questions, it seemed to me that the tech really didn't know what was up with the car, he answered nothing pretty much. Driving it home Mainly I'm just trying to figure out what its gonna take to get my vehicle safely back on the road but also since I just paid out alot of money, I'm worried about what it may cost too. The Work they did is here is listed below as well as there recommendations, Ball Joints(Lower-Front,Right)-Remove & Replace F Control Arm-Lower, Right Side Struts-142843 F Strut, Remove & Inspect or Remove & Replace front shock &/or strut assembly-both Alignment Service Supension And Steering- R/H Lower Control Arm Order Noter- Replaced all visable bent parts, still excess RT FT Camber, Recommend Frame Shop/ Rec. Steering Knuckle Thanks yall for the answers. To answer the first person, no the other guys insurance isn't paying this, its all out of my pocket. I guess saying he ran me into the curb is a little misleading, I apologize what happened is I was in the outer lane and he cut between me and another vehicle leaving no space I braked hard, but to not collide with him from behind I swerved into the curb. We never made contact so I didnt get a plate #. I just really hope this dont end up killing me financially, I agree that Firestone just gave up and I wish I didn't take it there.
